Mental Health Nurses Attacked at
Centenary
Staff and Patient Safety Threatened
Two RV mental health nurses are off work due to injuries
sustained in a late January attack at the Centenary site the Scarborough
Mirror reported in a Feb. 11th article...see
article
Police were called when a chair-swinging mental health
patient assaulted two night shift workers inflicting head
injuries.
Ontario Nurses' Association President Linda Haslam-Stroud claimed hospital administrators had not
reported the incident to the health & safety committee
within 4 days in violation of the collective agreement and the
provincial Occupational and Health Safety Act. The Rouge
Valley hospital had been warned not to transfer mental
health patients for the Ajax Pickering hospital by the
community and nurses previously, she stated. Intensive
acute care beds are not available at the Centenary site.
Ironically just such a newly-completed facility sits
unused at the RV Ajax-Pickering site...see news16 Mental
Health patients, including the most severe in crisis
patients, are being housed in overcrowded conditions
'however they can', Haslam-Stroud claims. "Some
rooms designed for four patients are holding five
patients".
